SUMMARY:
This window display was created to celebrate and honor the heritage of the 190 year old guitar company, C.F. Martin & Co. A quote from the company’s brand book states, “Since 1833 our guitars have been strummed by soldiers around the campfire,” so I took a literal approach in the execution of this window, allowing viewers to appreciate the history and craftsmanship that have made C.F. Martin & Co. a trusted and reliable guitar brand.
The window captures a scene of soldiers sitting around a campfire in the woods, beneath a night sky with a full moon and stars, surrounded by a densely wooded forest. Rather than using vinyl for this window, I created a ‘window within a window’ by cutting the shape of a guitar out of a thin sheet of basswood. A handmade guitar handle was also designed, allowing visitors to pass by and strum it if they wished.
PROCESS:
Ideation for this window began in a sketchbook and then moved to Adobe Illustrator, where I obtained measurements and developed the color palette. As the window design progressed, I conducted research to ensure the concept aligned with the company’s image. I chose to make the display primarily out of wood using alternative materials where necessary and employing different tools to achieve a specific look of antiquity and refinement.
